After a fun field trip yesterday to Okazaki castle and Daijuji temple we are back at Kamogaoka high school. The Bend students are attending classes with their Japanese host students. After school everyone will go home with their respective host families, experiencing life as a part of a Japanese family. Every evening we eat dinner with our host family and then particpate in family activities after dinner.
Last night after dinner our host parents wanted to take us on a walk through town. The main part of town is only a five minute walk from their house. As we were walking we began to hear the steady pounding of Taiko drumbs in the distance. We passed the town post office to our left and made our way down the street. As we walked, the vibrations from the drumbs reverberated through the streets becoming more apparent the closer we got. Across from a small sake shop we found a group of drummers practicing for the summer festival, which is to be held later this month. Listening to the drums as we walked through the narrow streets gave us a real taste of Japanese culture.
