The second thing we did at the Fujioka community hall was bo-no-te. Bo-no-te or Hand Stick is a folk performing art which comes from martial arts. It began about 450 years ago in the Nagoya and Toyota areas. It is said that the origin of Bo-no-te is that the Saumrai taught farmers how to protect themselves by the things around them, such as hoes and sticks.
It is performed at the Big Autumn Festival. Many elementary school students learn more than 2 patterson of Bo-no-te skills and take part in the performance. There is a traditional parade with a horse and more than 100 people at the festival. We saw some of the typical patterns of bo-no-te and a performance of the trumpet shell and matchlock guns.
